Background and Experience
We are delighted to welcome Chris Shaw to the Oxley & Coward Team. Chris is an experienced Private Client Lawyer having worked in this area since 2004 for a variety of firms. Initially starting at Atteys Solicitors in Doncaster before working for financial advisors, a multinational bank and an accountants. Most recently Chris has worked at a Legal 500 firm in Sheffield before moving to us in Rotherham, where he lives. Chris was recommended as a key lawyer in the Legal 500 in 2022 and 2023. The Legal 500 is a prestigious list of the top 500 teams in each area of law in the country. Chris’ most recent role was managing an Estate Planning Team which involved seeing clients whilst also training staff members in various areas of Private Client law. He had previously been responsible for the administration of estates as well as providing advice to clients on their personal affairs whilst making Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and applying to the Court of Protection.

Chris was keen to return to being able to provide a holistic suite of advice including Lifetime planning and estate administration to his clients and prides himself on providing a high level of customer service.
Chris is a Registered Trust and Estates Practitioner (TEP) and is a full member of the Society of Trust & Estates Practitioners (STEP) which means he is one of the leading Private Client specialists in the country with less than 6,100 STEP members in the country.
Prior to entering the legal profession Chris obtained an honours degree in Psychology from Bangor University in Wales and spent almost 2 years teaching English in Istanbul, Turkey where he provided lessons to a wide variety of people ranging from the market traders of the Grand Bazaar to Istanbul’s riot police and to the family of the (now) president of Turkey. Chris also has achieved the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
Outside of work Chris enjoys socialising with friends and is a keen hockey player. Chris has represented Doncaster Hockey club since he was 12 and, despite his advancing years (in hockey terms), still plays as regularly as he can.
Chris’s experience in private client law means that he is able to advise our clients fully on wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts, Court of Protection applications as well as the administration of estates (Probate). Chris takes a pragmatic approach to resolving issues for his clients to ensure that the outcome is the best for everyone involved.
